The house was reputedly haunted, at the very least it makes a good candidate for a haunted house. Christie’s friends spoke to the press about her unease at her home in Sunningdale. Without any credible reported sightings, the local authorities suggested Scotland Yard become involved. Unfortunately, when presented with the scent, the dog only whined and led the men around aimlessly for hours no new clues were uncovered.Īt this point, officers were thoroughly convinced the missing author had committed suicide. Colonel Christie, the husband of the famous writer, also made an appearance with the family’s terrier hoping the dog would sniff out his missing wife. Two days later, on December 10th, the police decided the letter was too suspect and resumed the search.Ĭlose to 500 officers resumed the search, covering a two mile radius within the site of the car wreck. Like a classic Christie mystery though, the seemingly obvious resolution was questionable. He claimed he’d received a letter from his sister-in-law saying she’d be going to a health spa for a few days. Christie’s brother-in-law came forth with a clue to her whereabouts. Then on the 8th, only a few days into the search, the police called it off. Conan Doyle, an ardent Spiritualist, sought out a medium. When law enforcement came up empty, they consulted Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Dorthy L Sayers, crime novelists in their own right, but even they were stumped. It seemed as if Christie had stepped into one of her own novels. Airplanes were even utilized in the search, the first instance in history. More than 1,000 policemen were assigned to the case. The ensuing search was one of the largest to date. Readers were shocked to learn that while her case and clothes were recovered, the missing mystery writer was nowhere to be found. Both front tires were teetering over the edge of a quarry when police happened upon the car, the only thing stopping it was the heavy undergrowth surrounding the cliff.
